Our History
Yalmer Karvonen, a first-generation American, founded Karvonen's in 1926 in New York Mills, MN. Yalmer operated the furniture & funeral business before handing the business over to his son, Harold. Harold and his wife Nancy operated both businesses for 31 years while raising 7 children. Harold & Nancy's son John took over the furniture business in 1981 while Greg began operating the funeral business. John grew the furniture business and permanently relocated the store to Perham. The Karvonen family donated the original New York Mills furniture store building, which became the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center. John ran the business for 34 years until his son, Aaron, purchased the business in 2015. Aaron and his wife Megan look forward to serving the community & continuing the family tradition.
