The Latest Furniture Color Trends [Fall 2020]

by Pam Silvia

As the season turns a new leaf, why not have your furniture follow suit? You can easily breathe new life into your living room and dining space by adopting a trendy accent color and adding a few coordinating décor pieces.

If you hunger for a change in scenery but are daunted by the task of color-coding your furnishings, we’ve got you covered.

According to home-design experts, these are the latest furniture color trends in 2020:

1. Classic Blue

We couldn’t start off this list without Pantone’s 2020 color of the year. Also deemed as one of the most relaxing hues, Classic Blue provides a suitable backdrop for “chilling out, maxing, and relaxing all cool.”

At the onset of the new decade, home-décor experts declared that pale monochromatic furniture would be replaced by bold monochromatic pieces. You can think of this azure shade as the new neutral, kicking beige and crisp-white furnishings to the curb.

2. Warm Pastels

While pastel furnishings are hardly anything new in the landscape of modern décor, this latest furniture color trend suggests you give this classic color scheme an autumnal spin. Often associated with springtime and Easter, pastels can also adorn couches and dining-chair upholstery in warm tones.

You can think of warm pastels as moodier versions of the soft colors you know and love, including lilac, pale peach, blush pink, and sage green. With this color palette, you can foster a romantic atmosphere with rustic textures, gilded antique mirrors, and floral motifs in patterned wallpaper or bouquets in vases.

Or if you prefer your living spaces to look relentlessly modern, we recommend opting for a warm-pastel focal piece, like a comfy sectional, and an eclectic assortment of black and light-hued wooden furniture to exude high-contrast style.

3. Clay Tones

If you’ve always had an appetite for nature-inspired décor, we think this contemporary color scheme is an upgrade from dull earth tones. And if Sherwin-Williams’ designation of Cavern Clay as 2019’s color of the year is any indication, clay tones aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Terracotta and autumnal shades of brown (with comforting names like cinnamon, hickory, and espresso) pair well with classic neutrals you know and love, including olive green and sandy beiges.

You can’t overdo this theme. Even if you have furniture upholstery in clay tones, these colors can also don table runners, area rugs, curtains, decorative pillows, throw blankets, and more. Just make sure you texturize your space for nuance—think suede, leather, and reclaimed wood. Perfectly suited to rustic décor, clay tones also look beautiful against woodsy accents, like wicker baskets.

4. Bold Berry Tones

Along the same lines as bold furnishings, a berry-inspired color palette makes for a chic living space. Colors like plum, mauve, fuchsia, and magenta exude sophistication against sleek textures like satin and velvet.

You can opt for drama with darker tones that are adjacent to blackberry and merlot. Broodier accents, like black throw pillows and dark wood furniture complement richer berry colors. You can lighten things up by appealing to minimalist décor (avoid knickknacks that can be perceived as clutter) and exposed-leg furniture to evoke a sense of airiness.

Or you can invoke softness with paler pinks and light purples. A fuzzy throw pillow or a small faux-fur rug can boost this goal as well. Don’t forget to give your living space the Midas touch with gold accents in furniture hardware and ornate picture frames.

5. Dramatic Jewel Tones

While design principles from recent years played it safe with scant décor and off-white pieces, the latest furniture color trends declare that it’s time to be bold and brash in our décor. Enter: jewel tones.

Emerald green, amethyst purple, topaz blue, and citrine yellow can evoke a smoldering feel with a touch of glitz.

In the 2020s, eclectic décor is in. Make your living room the crown jewel of your home by backdropping these hues with a bold wall color, a mahogany bookcase, a leather chaise longue, and a wingback armchair with tufted upholstery. Oh, excuse us—our imagination got away from us there.

6. Bonus: Multi-colored Patterns

Speaking of bold, we think patterned statement pieces with multiple colors are fair game. Quirky furniture doesn’t have to be “tacky” or “kitschy.” Let’s reframe the way we think about these household staples. How about “exciting”?

Maybe nix patterned pieces that look like they would blend into Grandma’s wallpaper. Bohemian designs (like chevron prints) or geometric shapes add enough texture without posing a challenge for furnishing the rest of the room. If you opt for neutral colors, like a high-contrast black-and-white scheme, you can still design your space with a handful of cheery tones in other pieces.
